On October 2, the MSC Taranto, a container vessel managed by Offen Group, reported the loss. Five empty containers went overboard off South Africa’s west coast between Mossel Bay and Stillbaai. The incident occurred between 01:00 and 04:00 local time as the vessel traveled towards Colombo, Sri Lanka. The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) confirmed that two yellow and three red containers fell overboard. This marks another maritime hazard in the Cape of Good Hope region during South Africa’s winter storm season. SAMSA, along with relevant authorities, has initiated efforts to locate and retrieve the containers. They issued a navigational warning for all vessels along the west coast. All ships should be vigilant for floating debris.

This incident follows a recent overboard loss by another MSC vessel, MSC Antonia. It shed 46 containers amid turbulent weather in August. Additionally, it sustained damage to 305 more containers. This marks a broader pattern of container losses in South African waters during winter. The risk is heightened due to frequent violent storms. At least five other vessels—Benjamin Franklin, CMA CGM Belem, Maersk Stepnica, Rio Grande Express, and MSC Antonia—have lost over 200 containers collectively. These vessels navigate challenging conditions.

The Cape of Good Hope has become a heavily trafficked alternative route. Ships bypass the Suez Canal to avoid risks posed by Houthi activity in the Red Sea. However, the Cape route has shown significant challenges. Stormy winter conditions and growing traffic increase the frequency of incidents. These involve container losses and stack collapses.

As more vessels utilize this route, the safety implications for global shipping networks remain under scrutiny. SAMSA’s quick response and continued navigational warnings are part of a coordinated effort to mitigate further risks. The repeated losses emphasize the need for heightened precautions. There may also be a need for reinforced protocols for vessels traversing these treacherous waters.

The MSC Taranto, built in 2011, was on a return trip between Europe and Asia at the time of the incident. This further underscores the risks faced by vessels navigating the Cape’s unpredictable weather during backhaul voyages.
