India’s ambitions to leverage the US-China trade war to boost its manufacturing sector have not met expectations. While other Asian rivals like Vietnam, Taiwan, and South Korea have made significant gains, India has struggled to increase its share in the US market and expand its manufacturing prowess. Despite efforts to draw foreign investment and increase exports, India’s growth has been moderate compared to its peers.
Limited Gains in US Market Share From 2017 to 2023, India’s share of total US imports increased by only 0.6 percentage points, reaching 2.7%. In contrast, Vietnam saw a 1.7 percentage point increase, raising its share to 3.7%. Taiwan and South Korea also made more progress than India, with Taiwan’s share rising by 1 percentage point and South Korea’s by 0.7 percentage points. Meanwhile, mainland China’s share of US imports fell by approximately 8 percentage points, declining to under 14%.
This shift illustrates India’s slower growth compared to its regional competitors, particularly Vietnam, which has emerged as a key beneficiary of supply chain shifts caused by the US-China trade conflict.
Challenges in Expanding Manufacturing India’s manufacturing sector has faced several hurdles, primarily due to its export strengths being concentrated in sectors with limited growth potential. While India has made strides in increasing electronic exports to the US, much of this is overshadowed by the country’s rising imports of components from China, suggesting that domestic manufacturing adds limited value. In 2023, China accounted for about one-third of India’s imports in critical sectors such as electronics, machinery, and chemicals & pharmaceuticals. This reliance on Chinese imports exposes India to potential risks, particularly if the US imposes further trade restrictions on China, which could affect India’s supply chains.
Foreign Direct Investment and AI Scaling Despite the decrease in global foreign direct investment (FDI) flows to China, India has not succeeded in attracting a significantly larger share of FDI. The country has been slow to create the necessary environment to become a key alternative to China in global manufacturing.
However, there are areas where India is focusing on modernizing its industries, particularly in scaling Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI is transforming sectors like healthcare, retail, finance, and manufacturing. Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), a leader in AI at scale, is mentioned for its high-performance computing (HPC) solutions, which enhance both performance and sustainability. HPE’s efforts demonstrate the importance of AI in boosting innovation and competitiveness in global industries.
Conclusion While India has made some progress in boosting exports and positioning itself in the global trade landscape, its gains have been limited compared to other Asian nations. To capitalize on the opportunities presented by the US-China trade war, India needs to address the structural challenges in its manufacturing sector and strengthen its ability to attract foreign investment. Additionally, scaling AI can be a game-changer for India’s future industrial growth, particularly if the country can harness technology to drive value creation across various sectors.
