Armenia has taken a significant step in advancing global solar energy initiatives. It became the 104th full member of the International Solar Alliance (ISA). On November 21, 2024, Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, made the announcement. This highlights Armenia’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
ISA: A Brief Overview
Founded on November 30, 2015, through a joint effort by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President François Hollande, the ISA strives to:
- Promote the global adoption of solar energy.
- Drive down the cost of solar power generation.
- Foster innovation, research, and capacity building in solar technology.
Armenia formalized its membership by handing over its Instrument of Ratification during a meeting in New Delhi. This membership aligns with ISA’s ambitious target of mobilizing over USD 1000 billion for solar energy deployment by 2030.
India’s Leadership in Solar Diplomacy
India serves as the backbone of the ISA, spearheading several impactful solar projects in the Global South, including:
- Solarization of Malawi’s Parliamentary building.
- Establishing solar-powered healthcare centers in Fiji.
- Setting up solar cold storage facilities in Seychelles.
- Installing solar PV rooftop systems in Kiribati.
