Vizhinjam, December 2024 – The eagerly anticipated launch of roadway cargo traffic at the Vizhinjam International Seaport is set for January, marking a significant milestone for the region’s trade and logistics capabilities.
Trial Runs and Infrastructure Readiness
Officials have begun trial runs using 40-foot container trailers loaded with dummy cargo to test road connectivity. The trailers are being routed via an interim road linking the port to NH 66 through a service road and an underpass. Meanwhile, construction work on the permanent approach road continues at a brisk pace, with completion expected by next month.
Enhanced Global Connectivity
Vizhinjam port is now integrated into MSC’s Jade and Dragon services, providing direct trade routes to Europe and Southeast Asia. This strategic inclusion significantly boosts the port’s potential as a hub for global trade.
Growing Commercial Interest
The port has garnered substantial attention from manufacturers and traders in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, who see it as a vital gateway for exporting and importing goods.
Addressing Connectivity Challenges
Despite the progress, business communities have expressed concerns over road connectivity being insufficient on its own. They have suggested setting up a temporary container rail terminal at Nemom or Balaramapuram to improve logistics efficiency. Responding to these needs, the state government has allocated Rs 206 crore to Southern Railway for developing a permanent container yard at Balaramapuram.
Collaborative Efforts and Future Plans
The Adani Group, in collaboration with Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL), is working diligently to ensure seamless operations, including the establishment of customs facilities. Additionally, the Centre has approved a cloverleaf intersection design at Thalakode, connecting the port to NH 66. Upcoming meetings will focus on further infrastructure enhancements to support the port’s operations.
