Vizhinjam International Port, Kerala’s ambitious maritime gateway, is steadily progressing towards full-scale operations. Developed under a public-private partnership by Adani Ports, the port is poised to play a crucial role in India’s logistics and shipping industry. Below is an overview of its current status, key milestones, and upcoming developments.

Gateway Container Operations Set to Begin

Kerala Port Minister V N Vasavan recently announced that gateway container operations at Vizhinjam Port are set to commence within the next four months. This marks a significant expansion, as the port is currently limited to transshipment operations. The inclusion of gateway operations will enhance its role in direct trade, boosting Kerala’s logistical infrastructure.

Port Development and Performance

Vizhinjam Port has been developed at an estimated cost of ₹8,867 crore and has already handled substantial shipping traffic. To date, 215 ships have arrived at the port, contributing to a total throughput of 422,846 TEUs.

A major achievement came in February 2025, when Vizhinjam Port became India’s top-performing port by handling 78,833 TEUs in a single month. This milestone highlights its growing importance in the country’s maritime trade landscape.

Environmental Clearances and Future Plans

To ensure smooth expansion, the port recently received environmental clearances from the Union Environment Ministry. These approvals are crucial as they pave the way for full completion of the port infrastructure by 2028.

Currently, preparations are underway to install container scanners and other necessary equipment, ensuring a seamless transition to full-fledged operations. The port’s commissioning is expected to be finalized upon the confirmation of an official inauguration date by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
