Sri Lanka’s Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG) has announced a significant $25 million investment in its industrial park for the establishment of a mattress manufacturing factory by Comfort Mattress Lanka. This development is poised to make Hambantota a hub for global mattress exports and further strengthen the region’s economic potential.

Factory Overview

Comfort Mattress Lanka will construct a state-of-the-art 62,000-square-meter facility dedicated to producing sponge mattresses. Operating under a 30-year renewable lease agreement with HIPG, the factory is expected to export 7,000 containers of products annually.

The company plans to import raw materials through a robust global supply chain involving key regions such as Southeast Asia and China, which will be transformed into finished products in Sri Lanka and shipped worldwide.

Strategic Utilization of Hambantota Port

Firms operating in the industrial park will benefit from direct access to the Hambantota Port’s advanced container terminal, a key strategic asset. Chief Executive Officer of HIPG, Wilson Qu, highlighted the importance of the container terminal, stating,

“The container yard we are developing will handle transhipment and strengthen HIP’s positioning as a gateway port.”

The initiative also aims to attract heightened interest in the industrial park, with HIPG expecting industries outside the port to leverage its strategic location as Sri Lanka’s economy continues to stabilize.

Economic and Employment Benefits

The project is set to generate substantial opportunities for local employment, particularly in the Hambantota district and surrounding areas. Qu emphasized the importance of equipping local youth with the necessary technical and mechanical skills to maximize the benefits of such investments.

“Training the local workforce is essential to ensure that the community can fully benefit from the employment opportunities created by investments like these,” he added.

Positioning Hambantota as a Global Industrial Hub

The new mattress manufacturing factory represents a major milestone in HIPG’s broader vision of transforming Hambantota into a world-class industrial and logistics hub. With this investment, the industrial park is positioned to attract more global players and boost Sri Lanka’s export capacity.

As Sri Lanka continues to rebuild its economy, strategic investments like Comfort Mattress Lanka’s factory highlight the potential of Hambantota Port and its industrial park to contribute significantly to the nation’s growth and development.
