Breaking Barriers in a Male-Dominated Industry

Nine women from the local fishing community have made history by becoming CRMG (Cantilever Rail Mounted Gantry) crane operators at Vizhinjam port in Kerala. This milestone marks a significant breakthrough in India’s logistics and port operations sector, traditionally dominated by men.

Vizhinjam Port: A Strategic Maritime Hub

Vizhinjam port, located in Kerala, is India’s first deepwater transshipment terminal. The port stands out for its fully automated CRMG cranes, which are exclusive to this location, making it a pioneering facility in the country’s maritime infrastructure.

Women in the Workforce

The port currently employs 20 crane operators, out of which nine are women. Seven of these women come from the local fishing community, demonstrating a progressive step towards gender inclusivity in the logistics sector.

Training and Background of the Operators

All the women crane operators hold BSc degrees, and for many, this role represents their first full-time employment opportunity. They underwent an intensive one-month training program, followed by supervised work sessions, before being entrusted with independent crane operations.

Economic Empowerment and Social Impact

This employment opportunity has provided financial independence to the women and has significantly improved the living standards of their families. Many of these women were previously housewives, and their new roles have led to economic upliftment and greater self-sufficiency.

Work Environment and Job Responsibilities

The operators work in shifts, managing the high-tech cranes efficiently. They are also trained to handle technical malfunctions manually if needed. To support their roles, the port company provides transportation, ensuring safe and timely commuting for shift workers.

Changing Community Perception

The inclusion of local women in such critical port operations has brought a shift in the community’s perception of the Vizhinjam port project. Previously, the project faced protests from the fishing community due to unmet demands. However, the employment opportunities have fostered a sense of acceptance and participation among the locals.

Future of Vizhinjam Port

Developed under a public-private partnership model by Adani Ports, Vizhinjam port is expected to be fully operational by 2028. Ongoing construction and further improvements will enhance its capabilities, positioning it as a key player in global transshipment operations.

Notable Operators

Among the women operators, Prinu and Karthika have shared their personal journeys, highlighting the motivation and aspirations that led them to take on this challenging yet rewarding career path.

This initiative not only marks a cultural shift but also reinforces the empowerment of local communities, setting a precedent for gender diversity in India’s port and logistics sector.
